For the fourth time in five years, the WSU soccer team will make an appearance in the NCAA Division I Championship tournament.

The Cougars were selected Monday afternoon to compete in the tournament, and will play the No. 4 seed Portland Pilots on the road Friday.

Ed Deocampo/The Daily EvergreenSophmore midfielder Korynn Blanksma controls the ball against UW on Friday at Lower Soccer Field.

“I think this hopefully starts to solidify us as regular in the NCAAs,” Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said in a press conference following the selection results.

WSU defeated Kentucky on the road in the first round of the tournament last season, but were eliminated in the second round when they fell 3-0 to No. 2 seed Virginia.

Other top seeded teams in the same region of the bracket as the Cougars include No. 1 Pennsylvania State, No. 2 Virginia and No. 3 Duke.

The Cougars and Pilots met last season in Portland, Ore. Then-ranked No. 4 Portland shutout WSU 1-0 early in the season.

WSU junior defender Rachael Doyle said it’s nice the team gets to play at a familiar venue, but it’s unfortunate they lost last year.

“We’re going back with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder to get back at them and we know we can do well there,” Doyle said.
