Letter to the Editor: Roe v. Wade Anniversary

Jan. 22 marked the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which gave women the right to make their own choices about childbearing without interference from the government.
Forty years later, women are still struggling to protect their health and safety - not just via abortion, but through access to contraception and comprehensive sex education. Many states, including Idaho, have enacted abstinence-only sex education programs. This restricts information about family planning and does not teach responsible decision making skills. Teenagers need accurate knowledge about birth control and sexually transmitted infections in order to make healthy sexual decisions.
Thankfully, WSU is trying to do something about this with the new mandatory "Booze, Sex, and Reality Checks" program for incoming freshmen. As a member of VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood, I think I can speak for the club when I applaud this decision, and want to aid in promoting the program's success. VOX tables always have free condoms available. I encourage every student to stop by our table on Friday and grab a few free condoms as we celebrate another year of the Roe v Wade results.
