A structural fire destroyed part of The Grove apartment complex construction site in Pullman early Sunday morning.
Four buildings were saved and four were destroyed, said Pullman Fire Chief Mike Heston. No injuries were reported.
The complex caught fire around 3 a.m. Heston said the blaze was under control at press time, but not yet extinguished.
“It’s probably going to be smouldering for a couple days,” he said.
Firefighters responded from Pullman, Moscow, Colfax and Whitman County Fire District 12 to help contain the fire. Neighboring Boulder Creek and Steptoe Village apartment complexes were evacuated.
“Our primary efforts went to get the people out,” Heston said.
Residents had not yet moved into The Grove. The apartments were expected to house students beginning Aug 17.
Heston said the fire department is unsure of the cause currently, but called it “obviously” suspicious.
