WSU Cross Country Head Coach Pete Julian resigned Monday after accepting a position with the Nike Oregon Project in Portland, Ore.

Julian, 41, coached the 2011 men’s cross-country team to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2006. The team finished the season 21st in the nation. Courtesy Athletic CommunicationsPete Julian resigned as cross-country head coach.

After coaching for four years at Metropolitan State University of Denver, Julian joined the WSU staff in 2009. He was promoted to head coach of the cross-country team in the fall of 2010.

Julian will return to his home state of Oregon to work with the Nike Oregon Project, a group dedicated to promoting American long-distance running using air-thinning technology.

“This is an exciting opportunity that presents some new challenges for me,” Julian said, according to a press release. “We are at a place with the sport of track and field where the direction of the Nike Oregon Project is making a difference.”
