Community members will have the chance to win a $30 gift certificate to Insanewich Sandwich and Cereal Bar by participating in the shop’s first "'Wich is Best" competition Thursday.
The competition will take place during Insanewich's grand opening from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Moscow.
"'Wich is Best" was moved a month ahead in order to line up with the grand opening. Doug Hall, co-owner of Insanewich, said the move-up challenged the sandwich and cereal bar to prepare ahead of time.
"The other challenge would be finding contestants on a consistent basis," Hall said.
"'Wich is Best" is similar to the Food Network show "Chopped": three contestants will create a sandwich of their own design and submit it to a panel of judges.
Insanewich’s competition will feature three community judges including Moscow Mayor Nancy Chaney, the UI Vandal’s sports announcer Tom Morse and Gina Taruscio from the city’s Chamber of Commerce, Hall said.
"We wanted some local celebrity judges," Hall said. "We thought that would be a challenge, but three people stepped up very quickly."
Hall said judges will score sandwiches based on three criteria.
"The judges will have judging cards and what will be on those cards is: what we call the ‘Insanity Look,’ and that's just the real visual look of the sandwich," he said. "Two: flavor, and three: creativity."
Hall said they have implemented this kind of competition in order to create a high energy environment at their new shop that is also different and fun. He hopes Insanewich will host a "'Wich is Best" every other month, if not every month.
"I think we can find some creative ways to do it every month where we have sorority wars, fraternity wars, business against business," he said.
