Inslee: A well-rounded choice for governor in Washington

This year’s gubernatorial election featured a race between an unfamiliar representative from Seattle and a well-known face from around the capital: U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., versus popular exiting Attorney General Rob McKenna.

As we have watched this race unfold McKenna’s one-issue focused campaign has become increasingly disenchanting, while Inslee’s approach to Washington’s future has become refreshingly practical.

For this reason, The Daily Evergreen’s Editorial Board endorses Inslee for governor.

During this election, McKenna has focused almost singularly on the economy, proposing a tax structure that will exacerbate the instability that already exists in the state’s tax code.

McKenna’s plan involves decreasing regulation on small businesses and cutting their taxes. But, these propositions are faulty and doomed for failure if implemented.

Washington already has a highly unstable tax structure, which fluctuates dramatically based on the health of the economy. With the state’s limited revenue sources and heavy laws reducing the legislature’s ability to increase taxes, cutting any state income is exactly the opposite of what we need right now.

Washington, however, needs more than just economic reform.  Inslee’s more rounded approach to policy, including his handling of several issues left untouched by his opponent, make him the right choice for our state.

For example, Green energy is a growing industry which if expanded will benefit Washington’s economy and the environment. Inslee, during his time in Congress, has consistently petitioned to invest heavily in green energy companies.

He also addresses much needed repairs to failing infrastructure, an issue McKenna ignores on his site. His plan would create jobs and expedite freight and commerce.

Inslee also supports Obamacare, wants to extend Medicaid benefits and implement a state health care exchange in line with the federal law, providing medical support for Washington’s most at-risk citizens.

McKenna, meanwhile, led the charge against Obamacare as one of the first state attorney generals to sue the United States and bring the case to the Supreme Court—all against Gov. Chris Gregoire’s wishes, according to The Olympia Report.

The Daily Evergreen also backs Inslee’s social policies, including his support for same-sex marriage and a woman’s right to choose.

McKenna’s social policies are far more dated and not in line with a progressive-minded state like Washington.

Washington voters, don’t jeopardize the well-being of our state. This election season vote for Jay Inslee.
